Bad Data
I was watching one of my favorite shows the other night, one of those shows about people who buy abandoned storage lockers. These guys bought a locker that stored someone’s garbage. They asked who would pay to store garbage.
This made me think, how many organizations store garbage in their CMMS or EAM. I’m sure you heard the old adage… garbage in equal’s garbage out. Are you paying to store garbage in your CMMS or EAM? Accurate data can be invaluable and lead to a multitude of correct decisions and identification of real issues. But if you are capturing garbage why spend time gathering it, entering it, and storing it? Capturing and storing data is expensive so ensure you get what you pay for and are able to use it.
If you find yourself paying to keep garbage in your system, look at your processes and procedures. Do they clearly explain what and how it is to be gathered and stored? Are they being followed? Is the data being used to make improvements?
